I love the campfire smokiness of English blends but Pirate Kake is nearly too heavy with it and too narrowly focused. It's like coffee---I adore a perfectly balanced cup of single origin SL24 varietal Kenyan, but at a certain point, it's about the transaction. Lights easy & stays lit, great smokey flavor to the bottom of the bowl, for me this is top notch tobacco, but as I stated it is very rich in Latakia which puts some people off. Also pairs nicely with Lagavulin, and a novel about tall ships. 2 Stars is tepid recommendation denoting some value but not likely to buy again. Not an all day smoke but one that we'll take you to Latakia heaven. But it is a flawed treasure. I was expecting it to be one dimensional, but while not complex, it's not boring either. If I could describe this blend in one word it would be creamy. Keeps away loiterers and unwanted company. If you are a latakia freak, as I am, then I will venture to say you are going to like this blend a lot. If that's your cup of tea though, you will certainly enjoy this one. This and the pipe I used in smoking the "Lat Bomb" were given to me a generous friend and this smoke was an adventure worthy of the name "pirate." If you want to strip the gears of a non-smoker, well folks this Latakia packed blend will get the job done. Here I am smoking this blend out of a Nording 2008 woodcock, sitting in my office reflecting on past bird hunting excursions and dreaming about the seasons ahead. How can you claim no nuance in well balanced blends but nuance in a 70% Lat bomb? To each his own. I think I smoked PK as regularly and for as long as I did because it does reveal subtle flavor-facets over the course of both a single smoke and repeated smokes. (In appraising Arangos Balkan Supreme for the first time, I remember thinking: Jeez, if this is a Lat-Bomb, then I must love me some Lat-Bomb blends). The cake / brownie is easily dismantled into crumbs that are easily loaded into the pipe. I could maybe see this in my rotation, or as a treat when I have a little time to enjoy a pipe on a lazy morning, but can't see myself smoking this daily. It is pretty straightforward with its flavors , but in an enjoyable way, and as I said before it is a very cool and smooth smoke. Highly recommended for Lat-Heads. Its taken to long to write this. Great aroma. Theres a topping on this caramel, prune cant place it, but theres definitely a topping. Right now I have it blended 50/50 with Prince Albert which mellows the smokiness a little. Burns all the way down and leaves the pipe dry and clean. I suspect that how much one likes Latakia is in direct proportion to how much one will like the cake. As always YMMV. As the write up says, you must really, really like Latikia to enjoy this blend. The cons: It comes in a little brick - it look very suspicious. Tomorrow I am going to a local pipe store where the pipe club meets (usually two of us) on Sundays from 3-6 and let my compatriot try some. There is also some sweetness to the blend, but the factor that I can't quite describe is almost a menthol sensation. A cold smoke, very enjoyable, especially (I imagine) in a cold winters day when you drink a smoky Islay Scotch. It was good at first, then it started to wear on me. I can't detect other content in it, than latakia and some latakia blended with a pinch of latakia. I'll also add that this tobacco stays with you for a long, long time. Without risk of being accused of hyperbole, I can categorically say that, if I were forced to only smoke Pirate Kake for the rest of my life, I'd be absolutely fine with that.

As a Latakia lover Id say this blend is heavenly. to my last order tried a bit when it arrived and again it was a bit sharp but enjoyable. Tastes smoky with mineral overtones. A blend of burleys, orientals and a whopping 75% latakia, Pirate Kake is full, smooth and creamy when young. But if you like the dirty, earthy, smokey taste of Lagavulin or Laphroig, then this might be just the ticket. Its reminds me of taking a handful of fresh basil and stuffing your mouth (but not as extreme,) and once the flavor has left your palate there is still a certain feeling present.
